This month we are examining newer alternatives to Botox. The newest product to hit the market is called Jeuveau. Jeuveau is touted to be the most similar to Botox.  That is a compliment given that Botox has been the market leader in the field of neuromodulators for several many years. Science explains the similarities. Both neuromodulators have the same molecular weight and they have the same core neuromodulator and accessory proteins. This seems to make the product work in a similar fashion to Botox with a similar strength, treatment zone, and duration of action. The company has taken the #NewTox to let everyone know that they are the new kid on the block.

The other neuromodulator that is relatively new is Xeomin. Xeomin is quite different in that it is the only product that consists solely of the core neuromodulator and none of the accessory proteins.  These proteins are not needed for the action of any of these products, so the company that makes Xeomin decide to get rid of them. The result is what the company likes to refer to as PureTox. This product tends to absorb very close to its inject site. At doses similar to Botox, it has durations of similar duration, but some have used the product at higher doses to get longer effects.  For those who are very sensitive products, in theory, because Xeomin has fewer proteins, there is less chance of reactivity. This has not been seen clinically to be an issue, but if this idea gives someone peace of mind, then Xeomin may be a good option.

Dysport is been on the market the second-longest. Dysport is known to kick in a little faster (on the order of 1 day) and of equal or slightly stronger effects. It is also known to spread slightly farther from in injection site.  This can be great for some with strong facial muscles who could benefit from this, but we avoid this product if we are the injectors are concerned with the product causes the brows to become temporarily heavy.

And let’s not forget that all of these can be used to treat hyperhidrosis – over-productive sweat glands such as in underarms, hands, scalp, and hairline.

So should you try one of these newer neuromodulators?  If you absolutely love Botox and finances are not as big of a concern, it may be best to stick to what you know works for you. There is typically subtle differences between every treatment and that difference will likely be more noticeable when changing from one NM to another, so if a concern about this chances is an issue, this is another good reason to stick to Botox.

For most of us, saving some money is a good thing, so these other options are something to consider. If you want to try a product that works a lot like Botox, Jeuveau is the product for you. If you like the concept of Xeomin being a #PureTox, this could be a good option for you.  If you tend to have strong facial muscles and want to try something a bit stronger, consider Dysport.

It is imperative that you talk to your injector and your unique situation is considered. Choosing the right neuromodulator is not a “one size fits all situation”. At the Stolley Center / Medispa Maui, our injectors have a  level of experience unmatched anywhere in Hawaii (Ok, it’s over 40 years of combined experience. That’s COMBINED so we are not that old!!!!) Bottomline is that they all work, but now you have some more options and even some opportunities to save.

To allow patients to experience these newer products, we are offering a pre-treatment special — 100 unit minimum
