What are Chemical Peels?
Chemical peels are most commonly comprised of an individual or blend of natural acids, each with its own unique benefits for the skin. Commonly used acids include glycolic, salicylic, TCA, lactic and retinoic acid. The peel solution is applied topically to the skin by a skincare professional to “peel” away the top layers of the epidermis in order to improve specific conditions as well as the overall health and radiance of the skin..
What are the benefits to my skin from receiving a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels have multiple benefits and can be received individually as maintenance for your skin, or in a series of treatments at specific intervals to address specific concerns. They are also an excellent option to prepare your skin for a special event. For general skincare maintenance, a chemical peel every 4-8 weeks is recommended. At MediSpa Maui, we highly recommend them prior to light and laser treatments to prepare the skin and enhance treatment results. Regular treatments can result in a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation, melasma, pore size, acne and acne scarring, as well as an overall improvement in the tone and texture of the skin.
Types of Chemical Peels?
Pumpkin Enzyme Peel: Enriched with over 100 nutrients, this powerful antioxidant provides light exfoliation and is ideal for sensitive skin and acne.
2% Lactic Peel: Ideal for sensitive skin and those unable to tolerate glycolic acid, this mild acid also eliminates germs and toxins.
MicroPeels: These peels by SkinCeuticals are a three step process that combines dermaplaning, a chemical peel solution and cryogenic therapy. The dermaplaning gently removes the top layer of skin and fine facial hair, the chemical peel resurfaces the skin and stimulates collagen and the cryogenic therapy is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial to calm the skin. A mild peeling or flaking can occur a few days post peel. Appropriate for all skin types.
What can I expect when receiving a Chemical Peel?
During the application of the chemical peel you may feel a mild to moderate itching/burning sensation depending on the strength of the peel that you are receiving. Typically a fan is used to minimize the sensation until it resolves. When receiving a light peel, such as the Pumpkin Enzyme Peel or the 2% Lactic, you may only experience a very light tingling for a few minutes. With these lighter peels you may experience minimal flaking after the treatment if anything at all. This is a normal reaction and your skin is still receiving the benefits of the treatment. The Micropeels by SkinCeuticals incorporate dermaplaning into the treatment, which results in less peeling and flaking in the days following your peel.
